Dr. Lee is a State Registered Consultant Clinical Scientist, a CUBS registered expert witness and Director and Owner Leegionella Ltd., which is an independent public health consultancy specializing in the detection of waterborne pathogens and the prevention of waterborne disease.
Dr. Lee has has a PhD on Legionella growth within biofilms and over 35 years’ experience as Public Health Microbiologist in clinical and public health microbiology, working within the National Health Service, University Sector, the Public Health Laboratory Service which became part of the Health Protection Agency (now part of Public Health England) and until 2010 leading and directing the HPA London Regional Food Water & Environmental Microbiology Laboratory.
She has extensive practical experience in the investigation of water management problems including the development of water safety plans and groups; biocide treatments; the ecology and control of legionellae and other clinically significant micro-organisms such as pseudomonads, mycobacteria etc. in various water systems including hot and cold water systems; private water supplies; spa pools, hydrotherapy pools; endoscope washers; dialysis units etc. and the investigation of gross water system contamination, outbreaks and nosocomial cases of Legionnaires ’ disease including in over 30 hospitals regionally, nationally and internationally working with and advising, regulatory and other bodies including the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities
Dr. Lee has been an active member of EWGLI (European Working Group for Legionella Infections now the ESCMID Study Group for Legionella Infections) for over 20 years and was a member of the EWGLI team (now ESGLI) developing and training EU epidemiologists and microbiologists funded by the EU and more recently by ECDC.
She has been actively involved in the development of national and international guidelines including with WHO; the HPA, HSE and Department of Health and is currently chair of the working group updating the ESGLI Technical Guidelines for the Investigation of outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease and water system management.
Dr. Lee also works closely with the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) and is Chair of the RSPH water special interest group and programme Director for the RSPH water webinar programme which reaches over 60 countries worldwide and their principal advisor on water issues.
